A portrait of Dr. Muriel Battle is mounted in the foyer at the main entrance of the school. Dr. Battle was a social studies teacher at West when it opened in 1961, and then became social studies department chairperson in 1974. She served as assistant principal from 1975 to 1978, and then as principal from 1979 to 1991. She went on to serve as Associate Superintendent for Secondary Education at Columbia Public Schools from 1992 until her retirement in 1996. Dr. Battle died in 2003. The motto of West during Dr. Battle's tenure as principal was "We're Glad You're Here." It is hoped that all who enter our school will view her portrait and be reminded that West has been and will always be a school rich in heritage, strong in purpose, and ready for the challenges that lie ahead.
